Mafalda, la hija de todos los Argentinos

Mafalda statue, originally uploaded by Nadège Laici.

Mafalda is probably the most cherished young girl in Argentina. She was born in 1964 in a newspaper called Primera Plana from the hand of Quino and has been enchanting generations of Argentineans since then. It’s with her strong political views, her cynical jokes and her proverbial hate for soup that I’ve been reinforcing my Spanish.

Singing Tango, originally uploaded by Nadège Laici.

Just a few days left before the end of the trip, I can’t yet imagine going back to the cold European Winter…

We had been scanning the news papers yesterday to find a Tango show but it seemed impossible to find a cheap one that wouldn’t be crammed with tourists. That’s when travelling with my dad comes in handy: “I remember this restaurant on Avenida de Mayo where they have people playing tango every night with dancers…”
The show really touched me, it gave another dimension to the music I grew up with.

La Recoleta Cemetery, originally uploaded by Nadège Laici.

La Recoleta Cemetery would be the equivalent of the Père-Lachaise cemetery in Paris.
It includes graves of some of the most influential and important Argentineans, including several presidents, scientists and wealthy characters.
It really looks like a small town only populated by cats.

We’ve also visited a rehabilitation and reintroduction centre for the rainforest animals. This young monkey apparently throws his faeces to the people he doesn’t like.

So imagine the scene, for some reason a small boy was carrying several bags of crisps. He’s quite hungry so he opens the biggest bag without noticing the big coati running towards him. He was still crying when I took this photo, poor thing.

Just as the argentine side of the falls wasn’t enough, we went to see the brazilian side today. The panoramic vision was truly incredible and we got to see even more wildlife.

I swear I’ve never been that hot in my life but it was well worth it, the Iguazu falls were mind-blowing…
The whole thing was enchanting, there were butterflies flying everywhere and coatis jumping on people to steal their sandwiches.

Junction of Parana and Iguazu, originally uploaded by Nadège Laici.
We’ve arrived in Puerto Iguazu and it’s wonderful, we really feel like living in the middle of the jungle with a 100% humidity. We haven’t had the time yet to go to the falls but we went to the junction of the Parana and Iguazu where you can see three countries at on once. On this photo Argentina is in the foreground, Paraguay in the background and Brazil is the small bit on the right.

Feliz Navidad!

Getting A Haircut, originally uploaded by Nadège Laici.

We’re leaving for Iguaçu today and I’m incredibly excited!
We’ve haven’t been up to much yesterday apart from the familial Christmas dinner and an eventful haircut.

Two happy tourists, originally uploaded by Nadège Laici.

La Boca means  “The Mouth” simply because this harbour has the shape of one when you look at it from the air. We were expecting to end up in the most touristy place in Buenos Aires and we were right, most of it looks quite fake.
We went around so I could take a few photos and were about to leave when I noticed a couple of Tango dancer in between two restaurants. They were actually rehearsing on a very small stage and we ended up watching them for ages. The guitarist saw my dad’s lips moving while he was singing so he asked him to join. I think I’ve never seen a wider smile on my Dad’s face. I don’t know how long we stayed there but I got back home with 300 photos…

Couple at sunset, originally uploaded by Nadège Laici.

We left Patagonia yesterday after my last trip to see a colony of Sea lions with the couple of Americans. They had been in South America for almost five months and had this sweet charm that some people get when they travel a lot.
On the beach, the big males were fighting for the females lying around and it was pretty amazing to watch.

On our way to the airport, I was watching the sunset on the Patagonian scenery with this playing in my ears while my dad and the driver were talking about tango.

My dad refused to come to the additional trips I did after the two first days of wildlife watching pretending that he was tired and that it wasn’t really his thing. He couldn’t stop talking about the animals we saw to his friend who was driving us back from Buenos Aires airport though…

Watching the sea

Couple watching the sea in Patagonia, originally uploaded by Nadège Laici.

I spent the morning with a charming couple from the states. We went on a beach were we could get close to the young elephant seals, which were all fighting to lay down at the best angle. They were molting so they must have felt quite itchy.

It's incredible the number of animals we got to to see on the peninsula of Valdez. This is a Mocking bird, which was imitating dogs barking among a lot of other birds' calls.

Patagonia sealion (Otaria flavescens) Male surrounded by females, originally uploaded by Nadège Laici.

These Sealions were resting on a rock in the middle of the water. All females for one male in the middle, he looks quite pleased with himself.

Southern Right whale (Balaena glacialis australis), originally uploaded by Nadège Laici.

I think this whale watching stuff is becoming an addiction. You know how some people need to smoke ten cigarettes a day, well I need to see whales every so often and it was such a relief to find a mother and calf Southern right yesterday! They came so close to the boat that we could see them by transparence. We got very lucky to find any, most of the Southern rights have already gone to their feeding grounds near Antartica.

Walking among Penguins

Walking among Magellanic Penguins

Magellanic Penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus), originally uploaded by Nadège Laici.

Walking among these Magellanic penguins was an incredible experience. Millions of them migrate to this area of Patagonia every year to breed. The males arrive first to prepare the nest (a sort of hole in the ground, generally under a bush) in exactly the same spot every year. The male-female pairs are life-long partnership and they can raise up to two chicks every year.
It was real privilege to get so close to them, they're so charismatic.

I  don't know how I could describe the two magical hours we spent with the dolphins yesterday. As soon as we left the bay they were there, all around the boat. They stayed with us until we left, racing in the waves and jumping around the boat.
